SEARCH-BASED E-COMMERCE PRODUCT
Search-based e-commerce product tracks users input in mobile browsers and suggests relevant e-commerce goods instantly, so that users can view the goods' picture and description, click the one they are interested in, and go to the goods' page directly without switching among pages or even apps. A team had developed the product when I joined Kika, then I tool it over and changed the display as well as the search logic through many iterations to make it better.
The idea was generated when we tracked our users' typing in mobile browsers and found that many inputs were related to e-commerce. Users from certain e-commerce-less-developed regions might not have e-commerce apps installed, while using mobile browser to look for certain goods, compare different goods' information, and find the one users are interested in is not a smooth experience. Here is where our product can add value.
Below short video shows what it looks like and how it works:

The display of the goods has been iterated several times. We did experiments on what types of goods' information to display, how to illustrate the displayed information, what size of the picture is more optimal, and what is the ideal total number of goods display per search, etc. The increased scroll rate and the increased CTR (click-through-rate) proved that the iterations worked well.
Front end looks pretty straightforward, while back end logic is more complicated. Below chart illustrates how the back end works:

Besides CTR, coverage is another metric we care about, as they together determine the total number of clicks and our revenue. Coverage is related to the match between users' inputs and the keywords dictionary. Match is determined by the method we use, e.g. full match, partial match, and the size of the keywords dictionary. We adjusted the match method and keywords dictionary to find the balance between accuracy and completeness.
At the very beginning, all the matched goods were displayed without further hierarchy. Even though we do full match, there are still many goods matched to each query. The amount of goods could not be well supported within the small space right above the keyboard. It was easy for users to get lost in the ocean and not a pleasant user experience. The way I proposed is to use tags which further categorize goods, thus helping users browse and select. This improvement enhanced the feature usage and total scrolls and clicks, and in turn increased our revenue.
